Diabetes Management & Self-Care Behaviors

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to find all the information you need about diabetes by simply reading this newsletter, meeting with a nutritionist, or watching a YouTube video?

Unfortunately, successfully managing your diabetes is a lifelong process with several areas of focus. Your management may be different from the next person with diabetes based on your physical health and other circumstances.

Still there are areas of focus that all diabetics need to regularly review for good quality management. This is according to the Association of Diabetes Care & amp; Education Specialists (ADCES).

For 5 decades ADCES has advocated for quality diabetes care and educational leadership.

The organization has developed 7 self-care behaviors that create the foundation for optimal health and self-management:

Healthy Coping

Do you understand the benefits of self-care and how to find support?

Healthy Eating

Learn the effect of carbohydrates on blood glucose and what, when, and how to eat.

Being Active

How much exercise is enough, what about intensity?

Taking Medication

Are you familiar with what medications you are taking including doses, actions, and side effects?

Monitoring

How often should you monitor, and do you know what your target goals should be?

Reducing Risk

How do you avoid complications of diabetes and what is the best way to monitor your risk?

Problem-Solving

Understand the actions to take to subdue hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.

Does this seem like a lot? It is. Diabetes is a chronic disease, meaning persistent for a long time, long-lasting, and difficult to eradicate, but there is a silver lining.

You can take control and live a healthy enjoyable life, but you must act. Educate, strengthen, and care for yourself.
